Masonry Work & Repair
How does weather affect your chimney?
Masonry work (including brick, stone and cement) can be adversely affected by direct contact with water, as water can penetrate the surface. Temperature changes can periodically freeze and expand penetrated water, cause stress on the materials, and accelerate deterioration. It is essential to prevent water damage that can cause interior and exterior damage to your home.
But water isn’t the only thing that can hurt your masonry work. Hazardous gas and smoke from a fire can cause damage to the structural integrity of your chimney. The corrosive elements of combustion can cause holes in the mortar, allowing life-threatening gases such as carbon monoxide to leak into your home.
Do you use your fireplace frequently?
If you use your fireplace frequently, over time soot from smoke and other particles can build up on the walls of your chimney. This build up of soot forms deposits known as creosote, a dark brown or black flammable tar. When not taken care of, these deposits can block your chimney and prevent smoke from leaving your home. Debris can also fall from the chimney, creating unsafe chimney fires. Guaranteed Home Improvement has fully licensed masons who will visit your home, inspect your masonry work, and repair or replace any damage.
